Cursing, you make a U-turn and head back home. Not bringing spare batteries is going to cost you a bit of time, time which some other geocacher could use to be FTF by the time you are leaving your house again.

You speed down the road, and somehow make it home without being pulled over. You see the dishes on the table and choose to ignore them while you search for batteries, finally finding some on your computer desk. You replace the batteries, turn your GPS receiver back on, and then once again leave the house.

After what you hope was not too long, you are back on the road heading toward the geocache.
